The NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme) is a national government scheme that offers funding to Australians aged under 65 years living with particular types of physical, cognitive or mental disabilities, so they can receive the adequate support they need to live independently as possible. Aged care funding will take over upon turning 65.

NDIS funding covers a wide range of services and speculations. Here are some of those:

  • Help people with personal care needs such as general hygiene, getting in and out of bed, managing finances, house cleaning and other domestic activities.
  • Payment for aids and equipment such as wheelchairs and hearing aids.
  • Psychological, social and speech therapy and physiotherapy.
  • Social participation activities.
  • Transportation assistance so that people can keep in regular touch with friends and interact with their community daily.

The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) is responsible for assessing your eligibility for NDIS funding. To be eligible to receive funding from NDIS registered providers, you must:

  • Be under 65 years of age.
  • For children, they must be aged over 7 years of age.
  • Be a citizen or permanent resident of Australia.
  • Have an impairment or condition that is likely to be permanent (lifelong) which stops you from doing everyday activities by yourself, or prevents you from living independently.

You can assess your eligibility criteria yourself by doing the following:

  • Step 1: Review the requirements on the NDIS Access Checklist.
  • Step 2: Call the NDIA on 1800 800 110 to discuss your eligibility.
